<p>Prior to going into the details of the exercise, I want to talk about why crunches are not the best abs exercise. The first problem you need to look at is belly fat &#8211; there&#8217;s no one exercise, not even crunches, that will reduce the fat in just that specific area.  You have to lose enough body fat through HIIT training and a strong diet before you have any chance of seeing your abs.</p>
<p>More importantly, in my opinion, crunches don&#8217;t really qualify as an effective abdominal exercise.   Abs are part of core muscles that are meant to stabilize your body and keep your spine straight.  Crunches, on the other hand, require you to keep flexing your spine and bend using the weakest point in your back.  This puts more strain on your lower back and your posture suffers.</p>
<p>A better alternative are situps, since you are at least forced to keep your back straight. The problem with situps is that they don&#8217;t really require much from the abs &#8211; all the action is taking place in the lower back muscles. As a result, your posture will get worse and you might even feel some discomfort in your back. You may have a hard time agreeing with this, but just remember what your old gym teacher always told you about lifting a heavy weight. Use your legs and not your back. By not doing this, you will be putting undo stress on your back muscles.</p>
<p>Plank workouts, though, are part of the best <a href="http://www.notyouraveragefitnesstips.com/six-pack-abs/best-core-exercises-for-men-women">core exercises for men</a> and women and are an excellent method to get washboard abs. You make your body stay still in a single position, which means both your back and ab muscles are getting stronger. Crunches only target the rectus abdominus muscle, but planks target both the rectus abdominus muscle ant the transverse abdominus muscle, which contains the rectus abdominus. This is definitely a benefit of doing planks over crunches. Because the crunch only works the one muscle, you&#8217;ll develop a strange profile view where your abs appear to be sticking out.</p>
<p>There are a number of different plank exercises that you can perform.   The best starting point is the standard plank.  Get down on the floor as if you are going to do a push up, but put your weight on your forearms rather than your hands. Once you lift up, you&#8217;ll want to hold your back as straight as you can while you keep your abdominals tucked in.  While it may sound easy, the longer you try to perform a plank, the harder it will be.  It&#8217;s best to start with 30 second sets and slowly build up to 2 &#8211; 3 minute periods.</p>
<p>You only need to perform this routine 2 or 3 times a week. Remember to rest your abs just as you would any muscle in the body.  Plus you use them during other exercises such as pushups.</p>
<p>For those who are looking for a more ab centered training program, there are other core and abdominal exercises that you can add to your routine, like hanging leg raises (prison workout style)and renegade rows. In a renegade row, you&#8217;ll go into your pushup position, then perform a one-arm row while you stabilize your body. You might also perform lying leg lifts or leg lifts. These should be done slowly, so the focus is kept on the lower abs and back.</p>
<p>Building a strong core is the best way to get washboard abs.
